25 days and counting

There are only 25 more school days for me. 20 for the boys and graduation for Derek is less than a month away. Senior pictures are scheduled and announcements will be sent shortly thereafter.  This year has been miserable, full of memories, boring, fun, full of sporting events, etc. It all depends on who you talk to.

Track and Soccer

Derek and Tyler were all set to participate in both track and soccer this year. We went shopiing in a snow storm to get cleats and spike shoes.

Then it started in February, it was cold, they were practicing in  the cold, and Derek sprained his ankle during a Thursday night basketball.  he could barely walk on it for a few days. He missed practices. probably rushed it some and during track practice about 2 weeks later, hurt it again when he was told to run some hurdles....again. So he quit going to track practices and finally told me he was done. He still wanted to play soccer, but no more track. I was sorely disappointed.  Now he has a job after school at a Nursery so he is missing soccer practices. I hope they will let him play. May I just say this has not been Derek's year.  He is so glad to be done. College can't come fast enough for him.

Tyler on the other hand is loving both track and soccer. He is running the 800m, 400m, 4x400m, and whatever else he can. He just participated in his first Invitational last week at Manti. That's pretty cool for a freshman. He is currently running a 2:18 800m which is better than last year at the Hershey Track State Meet.

Our school still doesn't have a full fledged soccer team, so the school allowed a club similar to last year. over 30 boys came out. They are playing against schools who need a scrimmage game. The schedule is not set, but its fun for them. the coaches are all volunteer, but they are allowing a bus to take them to games.

Disneyland!!

finally here
A trip to Disneyland is just the ticket for someone who doesn't want to grow up.  Derek says its for newlyweds or old people or families with little kids. I say its for anyone.  Despite not wanting to go, he had a great time. A threat on the morning of our departure helped sway him in the proper direction:  No Satellite, No Internet, No x-box, No car keys, and I would call  a babysitter. Tyler got home late from his last basketball game in North Sanpete (we lost again). No one was packed and ready to go, but we arrived at our awesome motel around 6pm, 9 hours after leaving UT.
I wanted to go to Cars Land. It was awesome, however, Cameron didn't like Radiator Racers. Too much jerking, up and down, dark and loud noises, and too fast.  I thought the second time would be better, but it wasn't.  Maybe another time. The weather was ok, not too warm, rainy on Sunday (50 degrees) with a gradual warming trend that hit 70 on the day we left. The Mater's tractor ride was way cooler than Luigi's flying tires.
I went on Tower of Terror, California Screamin' rollercoaster, two rides I never thought I would go on. We got Tyler on the Matterhorn, Jeremy loved that as well. Indiana Jones was great! It was perfect to be able to say to the boys, "go have fun, meet us back here at ...." or stay at the motel and we'll be back later."

After 3 days of disneyland we spent a few hours in LA. We got to go to a train museum in Griffin Park. Its a huge park with everything from horses, trains, and hiking trails.
found a train museum in los angeles

then of course we had to find the hollywood sign.

We even got to see the real space shuttle. It was so cool. The California Science Center is a quite an awesome place to visit. Wish we'd had more time.

WE got to see the Space Shuttle Endeavor at the California Science Center

Let's not forget the Coliseum at USC which is right next to the Science center.

Scouts to Young Womens...again

Right as my Christmas break was about to begin, I was called in to speak with the bishop.  OF course I had two days to stew about it and wondered what i would be called to. I thought it would be primary and i just didn't want that.  When the day arrived to meet with him, it was snowy and I was running late from work and I forgot.  I remembered about a half an hour after my appointment and I was only in Santaquinn. The snow was bad. I had Chris call the bishop and tell him what was going on.

I finally arrived, harried and feeling stressed out, only an hour late:).  Bishop says I need to release both of you from scouts. We were the cub masters. I almost started to cry. Then he said I was asked to be in the Young Women's Presidency as 1st counselor. I was floored. I really couldn't believe it. I certainly wasn't expecting a change of any kind, at least until the phone call to set up the appointment. (I was the secretary in Young Womens in Scipio until we moved to Nephi, but this group of girls is 3 times the size and I have different responsibilities and the curriculum has changed drastically)

Since that day I have had confirmation that I am supposed to be with the young women. Maybe its for them, maybe its for me.  I don't know.   I few months ago  I went to the temple and has a fleeting thought that everything was going to be OK. I have had my share of worries over my children especially my oldest two. the thought was so quick, that I can't be sure of what would be ok, but as He says, everything will. I get to work with the most amazing women. Friends  and women who are strong. If only I can be so.

During the transition time from scouts to young women, they haven't called a new cub master yet (at this time officially, but I do know who they are now). So for the last 3 weeks I have also had cub master duties to complete, a pack night to put on, and getting new leaders registered and trained. I have not felt so stressed out since the beginning of the new school year--but that is another story.  Last Thursday I did my last pack night.  I got to give out lots of awards and even do an Arrow of Light /graduation ceremony.  The awesome primary person who always helps with scout stuff (and my wonderful neighbor across the street) greeted each new scout leader and thanked the former ones.  Chris got donuts and I got flowers.  I almost cried again. It was a great night.

I never thought I would want to give up scouts, but with the time commitment necessary for Young Women's, family activities (sporting events for every boy in the house), work and some sort of ME time, there isn't enough and I gladly gave my books to the new leaders- who will be sustained next week. I still get to do the scout thing: all my boys are in scouts in some fashion, and I get to attend pack nights with Cameron -just not be in charge.

PS. Does anyone know what it feels like to try to be a good mom, be a good teacher at my school, support my husband and children in their activities, and now try to lead the young women to be strong and secure in their beliefs and standards? And not feeling like its good enough? And there is no time?    I don't know what kind of job I will do, but I hope it will be good enough.
