Oregon

I took the two youngest boys to Oregon last week. We drove about 2500 miles in a big loop.
July 1 That morning I took the car in for an oil change and ran a few errands. the car was loaded and we were ready to pull out. I turned the key and click, click, click. No go. I jumped it and went to a few car shops to have it diagnosed. the first guy said it was probably my alternator but they didn't have one. The second guy didn't have his battery checker there and he didn't have an alternator. the third place checked with his electronic thing and said it was only the battery. Once we had a new battery we were on our way.   We stopped in Boise the first night and Jeremy got his picture taken at Boise State. He told me he was going there after his mission. we also had the tires checked. there was a warning light for high pressure in the tires. They were really high, but letting a bit out fixed that problem.

July 2 We continued along I-84 and stopped in Baker city at the Oregon trail interpretive center. it was so cool, buy Jeremy wasn't impressed. we saw the trail itself.   that night we stayed in a state park on the Columbia river gorge. it was nice and windy. So windy it blew the poles out of their holder and collapsed part of the tent on us.  (came to find out we had a broken pole, thank goodness it was only a rain canopy pole.) {oh yeah I had to replace the cord in one set of poles after we left. We'd set it up the night before to make sure everything was there and double checked to make sure we put everything away and one of the poles cord broke on big tent of course.  so we took a big tent and a smaller tent.} Our next adventure with the car was interesting. the gas gauge dropped from half to empty in seconds and  I know we were actually empty.  So we found a station and filled up. it did it again, but I knew we weren't empty so I kept driving. The car stalled on the freeway. I pulled over, shut everything down, prayed and it started right up. we immediately went to a gas station and could only put in 6 gallons.  we were careful from then on to fill up frequently.

July3-4 the next day we saw the Columbia gorge falls and they were beautiful. I really enjoyed that part of the trip. We made it to Salem and stayed with Mark and Stacy, Chris's brother. they manage apartments and had an empty one so we stayed in it for three days. We went to Willamette state park  that evening. Its got a nice lake created by the river and the boys and girls (cousins) were trying to catch fish and frogs. It was nice. while there we saw an advertisement for a civil war reenactment for the weekend so we went back the next day. It was pretty cool. the actors live the part during the day. We could visit with them in their tents. set up union and confederate. we also saw a mock battle with cannons and everything. it was cool. Then the boys got to go "fishing" again.Jeremy was the fisherman of the day. We were using fish tank nets and he was catching blue gill and other small fish, even minnows. Of course no harm was done to the fish. that night mark drove us to the river to watch the fireworks.  fun day.

here fishy, fishy.
July 5 the next day was our first trip to the beach, Lincoln city. we went clamming, played int eh ocean, enjoyed the sun and blue sky and got a bit sunburned. Of course Jeremy enjoyed digging in the mud for clams, Cameron finally got into the spirit and got a few too. Usually they dig wit no purpose. each beach we visited was different. we saw the smallest bay in the world Depot Bay and the shortest river in the world, D-River, which flows from Devils lake. It was a long but fun day.

MREs someone gave us, Jeremy ate one for dinner...Yummy sort of
are we done yet? I am.

july6-7 The boys were so tired that I didn't make them go to church the next day. we relaxed and did a little laundry (I know, not sabbath day activities) we packed up, said goodbye to mark and Stacy and drove back to the beach to camp for a few days. We ended up at Devils Lake State park.  the fog rolled in and stayed the rest of the time we were near the ocean. the boys still played in the ocean. we drove to tillamook, stopped at eh cheese factory and had a few samples and ate their yummy ice cream. we stopped at Cape Meares lighthouse, and the tillamook air museum inside a blimp shelter, on our way back to camp we stopped at  kiwana beach. I think that was our favorite beach of all with the sand and tide pools. unfortunately we were coming through after low tide so the tide pools weren't that great. but the giant sand mountain was fantastic. it is also a beach known for its dory boats. there weren't any to see though. we ended the day with a small fire to roast marshmallows.

july 8 we left Devils lake and visited both Yaquina lighthouses near Newport. the wind was so bad at the head lighthouse i thought I might be blown off the cliff.  Newport was so cool. We parked and ate lunch on the bay, drove across the yaquina bridge. we walked along the bay and finally found a tshirt shop, too.  the boys really wanted to go to the "Ripley's museum, but we didn't have time. next stop was Crater lake.  My mom asked us to stop at whatever quilt shops we could to pick up free patterns. 6 were along our way so I stopped, Unfortunately that took longer than I thought because we didn't get to our campsite until nearly 10pm. We set up the little tent with headlights. we entered at eh north entrance and drove part of the rim drive. I kind of needed gas before we got there, but somehow missed the only gas station within 30 miles.  we missed dinner this night. too

July 9 the next day we considered staying another night, but just decided to see what we could and make our way home. Cameron had to see crater lake since he just did a state report on Oregon. It was so pretty. Blue and beautiful. the boys were getting road weary so we didnt' even hike to the bottom. I didnt' think we would make it. My foot was hurting and not the greatest shoes. Also the gas pump at the campground was acting up and we didnt' really have enough to drive the entire loop., so we left. I barely made it to the 30 miles to a casino on the way to Klamath Falls. From there is was 5 hours to Winnemucca. We went for it and drove through desolate, isolated, two lane roads in thunderstorms. it might have been pretty, but it was too dark and wet to appreciate it. We didn't stop for dinner either (again) because of the rain. At this point we were tired of camping, so a motel in Winnemucca was a welcome change.

july 10 the last part of our drive was all interstate (I-80) and finally back up to 80 miles an hour. we stopped in wendover for lunch and again at sportsman's warehouse to get a set replacement poles. No where we checked along the way had anything. We also got Chris's birthday present, a metal detector. it rained on the way home from SLC and we got home at 8pm. YES.

we made it, check engine light, check tire system light, and gas gauge issues and all. its nice to be back.

Another school year over...almost

It's amazing to think that in august I thought school would never end. Now it's May already and there are just a few days left.   It's been good and bad. I've  loved working where my kids are, no commuting to Provo. I've been able to attend more activities with my kids.
But working at the same school where I was let go four years ago was more difficult than I imagined. I kinda felt like an outsider. Lots of new faces since I left and lots of changes too. There's are still people in this community that don't want me to teach..and i don't know why. They are too chicken to say it to my face.   I've been under a microscope all year and there were times I was in tears.   The math teachers I work with are amazing and supportive. They were key to my rehiring. My principal has been upfront with everything and I appreciate that very much, even if some of the stuff he had to say was difficult to hear. I didn't pass my evaluation as well as I'd hoped so I'm still on provisional status, which means no guaranteed job after next year.  Disappointing to say the least.

Lots of other things happened this year as well. Derek attended the university of Utah and learned a lot about life. He's now in Austin, Texas working for the summer. He left as soon as final were over and won't be back until  school starts in august. It's hard not seeing my oldest boy very much. I miss him.

Tyler is driving now, been very busy with soccer and track this spring. He ran in region and did his best run all season today to take 10th place in the 800m. He's also leaving for most of the summer to work at a Scout camp in Mt pleasant. He starts just 3 days after school gets out. He's  excited but sad to miss all the camps his football and basketball teams go to without him. I hope he won't be denied playing time because of his job. He earned his Eagle Scout rank and was ordained a priest  along with getting his drivers license all in one week.

So it's just Jeremy and Cameron and me and Chris this summer.
Jeremy and Cameron will keep busy with me. Scout camps and redecorating bedrooms. Chris will work and continue putting up the fence in the yard. I'd love for him to finish the hallway to repaint the house and then get something going with the bathroom downstairs.
I will be busy working in between going to girls camp, youth conference, and conferences  and workshops for work.  I can't wait to go to Oregon with Jeremy and Cameron. Somehow I'm going to squeeze that in, in addition to helping at family odessey camp the end of July. I also need to get a job as a very part time CNA to keep my license current. it expires in august. yikes.

What is up with the extra writing on my blog?

If only I could answer that question. I  don't know how it got there or how to get rid of it.  WEIRD. I've tried deleting the post that its over and it shifts to another one. Its hidden somewhere, but  I have no idea where.

Coming and Goings of the Evans boys

Tyler will be working at a Tifie all summer.  He's excited, so am I but nervous too, since i don't know what to expect. other than seeing him weekends.  He's playing both soccer and doing track. One of the coaches saw him throw a softball and said he should try throwing javelin. His soccer team is headed down to st george tomorrow for a tournament..in the rain.  His JV basketball team did well, the Varsity did great this year, but couldn't quite make it past Juan Diego in the play in game. a sad loss of 2 points. Tyler was able to suit up for Varsity, even had his name in the program.

Derek has now asked us to cosign on a car loan (this summer)...for a nice 2010 crossover type vehicle.  with a payment almost twice ours.  He thinks we don't want him to have a nicer car than him..HAHA.  He's worse than ever.  I can't talk to him about it or anything else because I will get mad. Spring break ought be interesting, that is if he even comes home, but he might if he wants his taxes done.

Jeremy is playing another round of basketball that starts saturday, he just finished up on Monday with the other leagues. He still hates school, his "Life history" paper is done. I think he had fun making stuff up.  We put the appendix thing for a childhood problem and the big scar on his leg turned into nearly cutting it off in a motorcycle accident.  FYI he dies at 83 in Juno, Alaska and had 5 kids.

Cameron is doing a wax museum project on the wright brothers.  He has to dress up and give a speech, i don't know how many people he has to talk in front of, but it should be fun. He decided to be Orville. Basketball season ended on yet another loss, though the team improved. Instead of losing by 10-20, we were only losing by 2-3. He did really well. At least there's next year.

PS since I wrote this a few weeks ago. more fun things have happened.
Tyler sprained his ankle in the Saturday morning game in ST. George. It was so bad he couldn't put weight on it to come off the field. It has since gone down and he is maybe ready to start working out again. I took him to the ER when he got home just to make sure he didn't break anything. Tyler has finally met with the Eagle guy and we are waiting on signatures to application and letters of recommendation. If he didn'y have  soccer game, he could have his Eagle board in March, but it should be in April!!  Also he got a job working at Tifie, the scout camp in Mt. Pleasant. guess I won't' see him this summer either.

Derek is frustrated with school, teachers, us, and probably work too. He's planning on going to Austin, TX to work selling pest control plans.  it's supposed to be great money.  (MMM...)   Its hard to be a parent to an adult child and we are just getting started. I've heard some things this week that give me pause. He is a good kid. He's trying to be independent, His new roommate is...something else from what i hear. I really do hope he comes home for a long overdue break from college life.

Jeremy's basketball team finally won another game yesterday, with only 6 of the 9 players there. He has also decided to try out for soccer.

Cameron gives his Wright brothers speech and program this week. I hope he doesn't freeze up.
Chris is playing with his alumni buddies in Murray this week.
Me, Im just praying to get through the last quarter and keep my job for next year. (evaluations are here again)

RIP Shadow

One of our cats died Feb 6. She was in the garage and when Chris came home from playing ball she was run over. He thinks she was already dead. He felt so bad. She usually gets right out of the way.

She was 15 years old. I always though Oreo would go first since she was the one who only has one kidney.  (we found that out when we had both cats fixed. she had one of everything on the right side of her body... one ovary, one kidney, one whatever else..)
