Merry Christmas 2013

Evans Family News

2013

This year started out with a bang. Jennifer turned 40 so to celebrate we all went to Disneyland. We had a lot of fun. Cars land is so cool.  That is what Jennifer really wanted to go to. Even after a year of being open, the lines are still atrocious, though.

Sports are still an integral part of our lives. Basketball, football, track, and soccer games rule our schedules. Some weeks we attend 4-6 events. Each boy is doing well in sports and school.

Cameron (5th grade, 10 years old) was playing quarterback on his flag football team. He just started playing on his city basketball team. He also can shoot 3 point shots. He’s turning into a mini Chris. He still loves to read and play and draw.  I think he would be a great piano player or singer, but no lessons for him. Cameron wanted to hike Timpanogas Cave this summer, so mom and dad took him. The rest of the boys had ball practice. He’s a Webelos scout.

Jeremy (7th grade, 13 years old) is quite a football player, gaining yards and moving the ball . His team did slightly better than last year winning 4 games instead of 3. He’s also a great basketball player. Just the other day he shot a buzzer beater behind the 3 pint line bank shot. It didn’t win the game for them, but it was cool. He started junior high this year. One of the perks of Juab Jr. is that every incoming 7th grader got an iPad mini. It’s been interesting to see how they are using it in school. He definitely plays games on it after school. He just turned 13 too. He’s almost as tall as his mom. Jeremy is a first class scout still.

Tyler (10th grade, 15 years old) is one of the tallest boys on the basketball team at 6’3”. He is filling out and growing even taller. He needed new shoes again this year…size 14.  We had quite a time finding track shoes for Tyler. They just don’t stock big shoes. He got his learners permit for driving right before school started. He drives us to school every day, but he’s never home to drive anywhere else. Tyler ran track this year and did well. He ran 800m, and mile. He qualified to run the mile at region. Tyler is just one merit badge away from earning his Eagle. He completed his project in July. I guess he will follow in Derek’s footsteps and get it just before he turns 16 after a year of waiting to do paperwork.  The JHS football team did really well this year. Tyler’s  JV team lost only two games, and the varsity team made it to the semifinals for the first time in years.  Tyler shot and killed his first deer this year. It was a nice 2 point. We now have lots of deer meat to eat. (which isn’t gross like the last one we had—when Derek was a baby)      `

Tyler and Derek played soccer this spring. It was fun to see them enjoy it. Derek even got certified to be a referee this fall so he could work at college. Juab High will have its first ever boys soccer team in 2014.  Tyler really wants to play as well as run track, so I guess we’ll see how that goes.

Derek turned 18 and graduated from high school this year as well. He is now attending ...can you guess?...the University of Utah and loving every minute of it. He loves his classes, his roommate (most of the time), and the new friends he is making. Maybe one day we will meet some of them. He also had to have shoulder surgery this summer as well. He dislocated his shoulder for the second time in 11months, this time playing basketball. No sports for him for the rest of the year.  January he is cleared to play all the sports he wants to.

Jennifer, Jeremy, and Cameron all went on a road trip to San Francisco in April. A friend from IHS has a house on the beach in Aptos on Monterey Bay.  She invited us along with a few others to come.  We had lots of fun. It was cold, but beach combing was fun, and we took a day to visit San Francisco and ride the trolley cars, saw the seals on the pier, walked down the crookedest street in America. Alcatraz was all booked up, though so that will have to be part of the next trip. They want to go back again, so do I.

Chris and Jennifer celebrated 20 years of marriage this year as well. In a world where marriage and family are losing importance, it’s awesome to see we are still together after all this time.  We aren’t perfect, but we keep trying…together.

One new unexpected event of the year is that Jennifer has a new job, back at Juab High School.  Let’s just say it was a long story, but after speaking to a few individuals,  I got an interview, and  a job offer the end of June. I’m irreplaceable at Independence as they never filled my position with a contract teacher, just long term substitutes. I miss my friends and some of the kids, but I don’t miss driving so much. I can’t believe how much free time I have (ha, not really but it feels like it).

Jennifer is serving in Young Women’s again, this time as first counselor. She changed jobs right at the end of the year last year. She works mostly with the 14-15 year old girls in our church. They are amazing girls. It is a lot of fun to work with girls again. I still feel out of my element sometimes, but they keep me grounded.

Chris was just called to work with the 14-18 year old boys in scouting. He now attends mutual as well. He is still trying to be young playing basketball a few nights a week. He wakes up sore the next day though. He still works at Yuba Lake, year 14 I think. He actually got to help in a drug bust last week. An officer had pulled someone over and Chris was the first responder. He helped find the drugs in the bumper of the vehicle and get them to jail.

Jennifer gets her thrills from reading and watching her boys play ball. She gets to be home more now that she works in Nephi. She misses her oldest son and worries about all of them constantly.

Wishing you the best year ever. 2014 should be even better than this year.

Merry Christmas
LOVE,
Chris, Jennifer,
Derek, Tyler, Jeremy Cameron

It's basketball time....keep watching for updates to game times and scores.

Yes basketball season is here already, just minutes after football season ends in our house. It would almost be better to make a calendar to see when, where, and who is playing. but this is the way it is. Pictures will be added as I get them on the computer.

Jeremy is again playing on a team from Nephi that goes to Utah county. They play in TWO leagues Mr Basketball started first, and Bantam has a *. The Bantam league is very good, so we might not win, but they will learn a lot.
So far the team has won every game in Mr. Basketball and will make playoffs. I am listing Jeremy's games by location and time. Check this often since I will add more games and scores as they are available.
Nov 2 SpFk win
Nov 7 SpFk win
Nov 9 SpFk Jr win
*Nov 16 SpFk main 3p win on OT, 5p loss (by 30) There is a 6'7"  7th grader in LEHI!!!! He wasn't very good, just tall. The rest of the team are awesome shooters. i think we were intimidated by the tall guy, then figured out he wasn't great, but it was too late to stop. oh and we shot crappy and turned the ball over too much!

Tyler is on the JV team. Tryouts were on Nov 14-15. There are 7 sophs, 6 Jrs, and 5 Srs. Our tallest guy was injured in the last football game, (a broken arm) so there is always a chance Tyler will play more varsity (as he is one of the three tallest boys on the entire team at 6'3"; 200lbs) at least until he gets back.

Dec 18 Millard 515p win (all three won again) it was a sad game because the brothers of a young father (Josh Robison) who died suddenly just hours after his baby was born were playing. The older brother (Jeff) scored 41 points in the varsity game. JHS asked for a moment of silence and donated halftime monies to the wife and son. I realized that Derek played soccer with this family when he was really little.
Dec 20 Delta  515p win (all three teams won again) Tyler played well.
Dec 28 Ben Lomond 315 win (another winning day for the boys basketball teams) Tyler played during the second quarter only. It was a close game..

Juab made the playoffs!

In a great turn of events from last year, both the volleyball team and football team advanced to play beyond the regular season.  The volleyball team played Tooele and lost in the set in three games, then they played Union and lost the set in three games.  It was the first time they made it to state in nearly a decade.  Considering everything they had a great season, sorry it had to end in a loss, though.

The football team is playing better than ever. They only lost 3 games all season,  and only one of those in region. In the quarterfinals, they got to play at home against Grantsville.  Earlier in the season, Grantsville beat us in a shut out on homecoming night 14-0.  The game last night was amazing (so I hear, I had other commitments and couldn't be there). In a miracle, WE WON!  it was tied at halftime 14-14, then end of the third was 28-14 for Juab, and ended in a 28-21 win.  Unfortunately it ended on a sour note with confrontation. Neither team shook hands in the center of the field like usual at the end of the game.

Next week Juab plays against Judge Memorial (#1 in the state in 3AA) in the semi finals at SUU at 4pm.  It will be a great game, especially if Juab comes out to win as they have all season long.

GO WASPS!!

The Semi Final game was amazing, but sad. We played hard but it just wasnt enough. Our Quarterback broke his arm in the second possesion of the game and ended up having surgery the following Monday. He ws heartbroken as were his parents, but he is a junior and he still leads the state as the best QB passer.
The team continued fighting on with a backup, who actually was the starting QB last year.
The final score was 41-20 for Judge Memorial. We were tied twice in the game. 7-7, and 14-14, but some mistakes at the end of the game and tired guys. I know Judge didn't think we were going to come out so awesome, but we did great.    the score looks worse than it was. I haven't seen a better team in quite a while.  Who knows what would have happened if Nick has been able to play the entire game. Maybe we would've won, maybe we would've lost.     A few people think Judge wanted to take Nick out...If that's true too bad they didn't think they could win with him in.  4th place in state isn't so bad.  Can't wait for next year.

Football and fall

Today was Jeremy's last football game for 7th grade. He played defense only, which was a change from the last games. We lost the B bracket championship to north sevier 16-8. Oh we'll, their overall record this season was 4 wins and 6 losses, better than last year. We saw lots of improvement from the team but also the same mistakes all year long. One of them being not putting the right kids the right positions. Jeremy did great on offense in last weeks' games but once our injured boys were back, Jeremy was relegated to something else.

Cameron has one game left and then playoffs. His team has only won once so far and that was last week. He is amazing thrower at quarterback. He loves it

Tyler's JV team is doing awesome. Their second loss came at the hands of manti. Thursday. It was a close game with each team scoring nearly every possession, but manti came out on top in the last minutes of the game. The varsity lost their first game in region to manti yesterday, by only one touchdown. Manti has an amazing rushing game. One of their players rushed for over 300 yards. He just gets behind his blockers and goes. We couldn't stop him.

We just found out Tyler is #12 in sacks in 3A south. Interesting ... Hasn't played varsity much. More on that later.  (He hasn't played varsity enough to get stats of any kind, nor has he sacked anyone in any game,  hmmm.....)

Each game we go to has the most extreme weather. Today was beautiful. I think I got sunburned. During Tyler's game Thursday we froze and got soaked by rain.  Last Saturday was a sunny cold day. The night before that I could see my breath all night long. Cameron had a game cancelled because of cold and rain, but the JV were still playing in it. Tyler doesn't think he has had a game in sunshine all season. It's been overcast or dark or rainy or cold or snowy right before. Jeremy had a game postponed as well due to lightning.  What a great time, fall. with the weather changes occurring hourly.  I think the first snow was Oct 3 or so.  Didn't stick, but it was visible for quite a while.

We love fall and we love football. (Glad it's nearly over though). Basketball is here already.

Reading old posts

I just decided to read some of my old posts. I'd say I've gotten better at posting and adding pictures with captions. It was fun to read them from the  last 4 years. try it you might like them too.

20 years

Its hard to imagine that 20 years has passed by so quickly.  I don't feel that old.  We've had so many adventures together.   We've graduated from college, got real jobs, raised and still raising 4 handsome boys, endured a few surgeries, moved from the big city to the middle of nowhere, spent hours in the car traveling to school, games, practices, traveled the world or at least the west coast, as much as possible.  We have a few gray hairs (one of us more than the other), we grew up and learned some things the hard way. we learned to compromise, love more.  In any case we love each other more than ever before.  Here's to 20 more.

These are just a few of the many, many pictures we have taken. (the rest are not digital so scanning is in order and will be done someday)

football season in full force...and other news

May I just say it is so nice to leave work and be home in 5 minutes or less...  I LOVE IT.  I can say, "I love my job" again.  I can't believe what a change this has been. I am more mature, more experienced, and a better teacher thanks to Independence. However I don't have the stress of driving, hurrying, and working in the school. The changes that were made last year have not been good to the teachers. I believe half of the faculty and staff at independence has changed. The day before school started, there was not a new teacher to take my place.  I am happier and slightly more relaxed at JHS. I miss my friends at Independence, but I just don't miss working there.

Jennifer in her classroom at JHS
In other news. Tyler and Jeremy are still safely playing tackle football. There have been injuries to their teammates, though. Tyler is now starting JV offensive lineman due to an older boy tearing ACL  in the last game.  Good for Tyler, bad for the other kid. Just last night in Jeremy's game, a boy on our team was tackled hard by two bigger boys. He went down and they called an ambulance for him.  Jeremy told me today he had 3 small brain bleeds  (bruises) and a can't use his brain for the next little while i thought it was a neck injury and he has  that too. He spent the night in the hospital.  The Freshman have had a broken collar bone and a few concussions. JV team has also had a concussion or two and a broken wrist.  Someone tell me again why I let my kids play such a rough sport.Cameron has his first flag football game yesterday. (I don't know if I like the rules they are using this year, though). Cam was playing QB for most of the game. He did pretty good. Pray for continued good health.  In any case, the boys love playing ball. (see pictures and updates on scores, etc, on football blog)

Derek is officially loving being a UTE and part of the MUSS at football games. He has an awesome roommate, but I haven't met him yet.  He is taking 4 classes: precalculus, victorian history 3000 level, geology of national parks, and writing. He has two institute classes, mission prep with his roommate and BofM. He is a referee for intermural soccer games at U and trying to get FIFA certified to be a ref for all soccer games. I think he has settled in pretty well and we text every few days. I miss having him around though. Who would have thought?

Derek in his dorm room. first year at college.

First days of school were great. No stress commute, got to see all of them go to school. Now its nearly midterm. (and grades aren't due soon...that's an independence thing)

Tyler second day of school as a 10th grader

Jeremy second day of school as a 7th grader.

Cameron second day of school as a 5th grader
Tyler is driving a bit. This was his FIRST time ever driving on the second day of school. I was glad it was only a mile.  Definitely needs lots of practice.
it's official, Tyler has a driving permit.

Jamberrynails are still fun to wear. I change them up whenever I want.  Not overly ambitious to sell them but I need to be.
